ILC family stands with Sinjajevina
The ILC family is with us!
From May 23 to 26, the civic initiative Save Sinjajevina participated in the "Global Land Forum" organized by the International LAND Coalition, a consortium of over 300 organizations from around the world, of which our organization has been a member since last year.
We informed the forum participants about the problems we are facing on Sinjajevina, that is, the Government's decision from 2019 to establish a military training ground on our mountain, which the local community opposes. We emphasized that even with the formation of the new government, despite the promise, our problem has not been solved and that Sinjajevina is still a military training ground. The struggle of the local livestock community and the citizens of Sinjajevina is supported by colleagues from all over the world, who pointed out that our struggle deserves respect and that we are not alone. The ILC family is with us!
Our main activity was to familiarize the members of the ILC consortium with the petition, which is currently being signed, and with which we request the protection of Sinjajevina from the European Union and the Government of Montenegro.
Information about the petition and the campaign is available on the website of our partner organization Land Rights Now! The petition requesting the declaration of Sinjajevina as a protected area can be signed at the link -
The ILC declaration was also adopted at the forum, which, among other things, announces the year 2026 as the International Year of Cattle Breeders and Pastoralists. It is established that local communities and indigenous peoples represent key factors in the fight against climate change, which is increasingly visible in the world, but also for ensuring sustainable food production, the prices of which are rising and the world is facing the risk of food shortages. The declaration states that the Covid-19 pandemic has brought with it a serious threat to the land rights of indigenous and local communities, and that the extent of land grabbing from traditional communities has increased. During the pandemic, we also witnessed the solidarity and resilience of people in small-scale and family farms, which fed local communities during the pandemic.
The forum also paid tribute to land protection fighters around the world who have been killed since 2018. Most of the fighters killed are in South America, among indigenous peoples.
The ILC emphasizes the importance of youth participation in decision-making on land management around the world, and accordingly supported the declaration that ILC youth wrote for the forum.
The Civil Initiative Save Sinjajevina also participated in the team for writing the ILC declaration.
The declaration is available at the link -

"At the core of our coalition are people's organizations that represent the people who live on and from the land: women, youth, indigenous peoples, herders, family farmers and peasants, forest dwellers, hunter-gatherers, fishermen, Afro-descendants, residents, local communities and other groups, including refugees and internally and climate displaced persons."
